Optical communications is the backbone of our information society; however currently optical fiber transmission at conventional band is approaching the capacity limit. The project will explore optical communications at 2 um terra incognita and explore novel way using photonic chips for large-capacity energy-efficient optical communications at 2 um beyond the ‘capacity crunch’. Novel optical switching technique based on photonic integrated circuits will also be investigated.
